PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Junior Jenna Janu was the top North Dakota golfer at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate that got underway Saturday. Janu's opening round 79 (+7) was the team's best round of the day and her 36-hole score and her 160 (+16) also topped the Fighting Hawks.

Janu is tied for 33rd as her efforts helped UND post scores of 338 (+50) and 339 (+51) at the Classic Club.

Santa Clara built a two-shot lead on Hawaii (600; +24) to lead the 12-team field after posting a 598 (+22). The Broncos' Marni Murez holds a three-shot lead in the race for medalist honors after posting an even-par score of 144 (E) during day-one action.

Freshman Ashlyn Guggisberg turned in scores of 81 and 85 for the Fighting Hawks and is tied for 56th (166; +22). 

UND will wrap up the 54-hole event on Sunday with final-round play.
