WHKY Game Notes: Sioux to conclude 2009-10 home action on Saturday

WHAT'S ON TAP: The Fighting Sioux head to Bemidji, Minn., on Friday to take on the Beavers before returning back the to Ralph Englestad Arena on Saturday for its final home game of the 2009-10 campaign. Both games are schedule for 7:07 p.m.

MEDIA INFORMATION: Most Fighting Sioux regular season home hockey games can be heard on 1440 AM ("The Fan") and on stations across the Fighting Sioux Radio Network (excluding Dec. 13 against Minnesota) with broadcaster Darrin Looker calling the action. SCOUTING REPORT: The Beavers are currently in fourth place in the league with 26 points from eight wins, seven ties and winning three shootouts ... Bemidji State is 9-14-7 overall this season ... They are led by head coach Steve Sertich who is in his fourth season at the helm of BSU with a record of 36-113-25 ... In conference play, the Beavers are averaging 1.83 goals while giving up 2.25 ... Junior Erin Cody leads the team in points and goals (17-11-28).

THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The series is tied 14-14-2 and 7-7-1 at each home rink.

LAST ACTION: The Fighting Sioux split its weekend and season series against The Ohio State Buckeyes with a 2-1 overtime loss on Friday before exploding for 7-2 win on Saturday.

UND opened its series with its second overtime loss in three games as the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie through regulation. The Fighting Sioux lone goal came from Roseau, Minn., native Mary Loken while redshirt freshman Jorid Dagfinrud allowed two goals and made 38 saves in 62:16 of work.

The Sioux responded with seven goals from six different players the following night. Freshman Holly Perkins led the way with two goals and an assist while senior Susanne Fellner, sophomores Sara Dagenais, Ashley Holmes and Margot Miller and freshman Jordan Slavin added goals. Sioux points leader Alyssa Wiebe had three assists in the game and four on the weekend.

Sophomore Stephanie Ney backstopped the Sioux on Saturday making 39 saves while allowing two goals picking up her first win in net since defeating the same Buckeyes on Nov. 6, 5-4.

Three of UND's goals came by way of a defenseman which is the first time since the 2002-03 and first time ever three different defensemen scored.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Bemidji State, behind a goal and assist from defenseman Montana Vichorek, a pair of assists from right winger Annie Bauerfeld and the 36-save shutout goaltending of Alana McElhinney, blanked host Wisconsin 2-0 on Sunday (Feb. 7) in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action to take over sole possession of fourth place with two weeks to go in the 2009-10 regular season. BSU also completed the four-game series vs the defending national champion Badgers, 2-2-0.

The Beavers were joined as victors on Sunday afternoon by Minnesota State, as the Mavericks also recorded a conference shutout in a 4-0 decision over visiting St. Cloud State. The MSU line of left winger Emmi Leinonen (1g, 1a), center Moira O'Connor (1g, 1a) and right winger Christina Lee (3a) led the way offensively with seven points while Alli Altmann stopped all 33 shots on goal. The four-game regular season series between MSU and SCSU finished with the Huskies holding a 2-1-1 advantage.

The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs completed a two game sweep of league-leading Minnesota in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play on Saturday (Feb. 6) evening in Duluth with a 3-0 victory, keeping the race for the conference championship a two-team affair and joining the Gophers as a first round home WCHA playoff host. The Bulldogs, who stretched their unbeaten streak to 11 games at 9-0-2, also defeated Minnesota 3-1 on Friday evening. The sweep moves UMD to within three points of the defending WCHA champion Golden Gophers with four conference games remaining.

Host Wisconsin upended Bemidji State 6-1 outdoors before 8,263 in the Culver's Camp Randall Hockey Classic. The Badgers took over sole possession of third place.

UND officially gets its season underway this week at the Ole Miss Rebel Invitational, part of 10 matches in the first nine days of the 2017 campaign.
