GRAND FORKS, N.D. – UND women’s hockey freshman forward Ryleigh Houston was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s Rookie of the Month for December, the league announced Thursday.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native led all conference freshmen with three goals during the final month of 2016. She also tallied one assist for a total of four points through UND’s six games in December.
Of her three goals, one was scored on the power-play and another was a game-winner. She finished the month with 17 shots on net, a +1 plus/minus rating and three blocked shots.
The award is the first Rookie of the Month honor for UND since the WCHA began recognizing monthly accomplishments last season. It is the third overall for North Dakota, and the second this season after Lexie Shaw was named Defensive Player of the Month for October.
In addition to the monthly honor, Houston has been named the league’s Rookie of the Week twice this season, on Oct. 5 and Nov. 15. She is currently tied for third among freshman points in the WCHA, and leads the league with three power-play goals and three game-winning goals.
UND’s freshman class as a whole leads the WCHA in scoring, and has earned a total of five Rookie of the Week honors this season.
The Fighting Hawks return to action on Jan. 13-14 with a road series against Minnesota State.
