GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota freshman goaltender Peter Thome and junior defenseman Christian Wolanin were recognized by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) on Monday for their performances in North Dakota’s conference split with Colorado College.
Thome was named NCHC Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season after posting a .944 save percentage on the weekend. The Minneapolis, Minn., native started Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Tigers, making 20 of 21 saves. He also came off the bench one night earlier in UND’s 4-2 loss, turning aside 14 of the 15 shots he faced.
In 11 games (10 starts) this season, Thome is 5-3-3 with a 2.15 goals against average and .917 save percentage.
Wolanin led all NCHC defensemen on the weekend with three points, including a penalty shot goal in Friday’s 4-2 loss to CC. He also assisted on UND’s first two goals, both on the power play, during Saturday’s victory. It was the second weekly NCHC honor of Wolanin’s career. He was also recognized once as a sophomore.
In 30 games this season, Wolanin leads the team with 25 points and is tied for the team lead with nine goals, both career highs. He is tied for third among NCHC defensemen in scoring and is bidding to become the first defenseman since James Patrick in 1982-83 to lead UND in scoring.
Colorado College freshman forward Troy Conzo was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week and St. Cloud State goaltender Dávid Hrenák was the NCHC Rookie of the Week.
Thome, Wolanin and the Fighting Hawks travel to Omaha this week for a series with the Mavericks.
