GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Seven members of the University of North Dakota hockey team have been named American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American Scholars for the performance in the classroom during the 2016-17 season.

North Dakota’s honorees included: freshmen Ludvig Hoff, Andrew Peski, Colton Poolman, Cole Smith and Zach Yon; sophomore Ryan Anderson; and senior Matt Hrynkiw. All seven of UND’s honorees also garnered National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Academic All-Conference Team honors last season, and Hrynkiw as the league’s co-recipient of the NCHC Sportsmanship award.

The AHCA All-American Scholars initiative, in its first season, recognizes student-athletes with a  grade-point average of 3.6 or higher and who participated in at least 40 percent of their teams’ games in 2016-17. Playing time requirements were waived for backup goaltenders and injured players.

The AHCA has recognized on-ice excellence with its All-America program since 1967. Its new academic program honored 352 NCAA Division I men’s hockey players for their 2016-17 academic performance.
