UND opens 2017 fall season at Drake Invite

DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of North Dakota men's tennis team began its fall campaign at the Drake Invitational at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa this past weekend.

With only two UND student-athletes from last season, eight players made their UND debut at the invite: Lukas Buth, Davide Callegari, Nicholas LaPoint, Annei Laska, Daniel Martinez, Eden Mrozek, Hunter Terrell, and Ben Yeacker.

In singles play, Sophomore Lukas Buth won his first match in Flight '1', defeating Eric Marbach of NIU, 6-4,6-4. Freshman Davide Callegari defeated Omaha's Matt Dunn 6-3, 2-6, 10-7, in the Flight '2' Consolation bracket. Junior Ben Yeacker defeated Gustavus' Lawrence Hiquiana, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 and NWMSU's Francisco Mesa, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in Flight '4' Consolation play, but played Gustavus' Tommy Entwistle in the consolation championship.

In doubles play, Martinez and Buth defeated both Omaha's Nathan Reekie and Matt Dunn, 6-4 and Creighton's Brooks Kendall and Stratton Brown 6-1 in Flight '1' Consolation play. The UND pair went on to be defeated by Creighton's Alex Koca and Armando Gandini, 7-6 in the consolation championship.

The Fighting Hawks will continue invitational play at the Creighton Invite the weekend of Sept. 29 in Omaha, Neb.
